The National Gallery Dublin

The National Gallery in Dublin is a must see for all art enthusiasts

If you visit Dublin and are an art lover, you cannot leave without spending some time enjoying the beautiful collection of paintings and sculptures at the National Gallery situated on Merrion Square West and Clare Street.

The National Gallery, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1854, first opened its doors to the public in January 1864 and has since had hundreds of thousands of people get pleasure from the collection of stunning art it has and does house.

With its collection today boasting around 2,500 paintings and approximately 10,000 other pieces of artwork in different media, such as drawings, prints, watercolours and sculptures, the National Gallery continues to delight its visitors.

If you have taken advantage of Dublin’s car rental businesses at the airport or within the city, there is Meter parking around Merrion Square close to the Gallery entrance. There are also many drop-off points for those using public transport around the Merrion Square and Clare Street vicinity.

There are renowned collections of Irish paintings, with the majority on permanent display and every major European School of painting is well represented to cater for all tastes.

The gallery also houses a Yeats Museum, with works from Jack B Yeates, his father John Butler, and other members of the world famous artistic family.

During the month of August guests can enjoy ‘From Raphael to Rossetti: Drawings from the Collection’ which runs until the 23rd August 2009.

Other exhibitions include ‘Harry Clarke’s Illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales’ which is bound to be a firm favourite with families and people wanting to relive their childhood with these stunning sketches. This exhibition also runs until the 23rd August 2009.

As well as artwork, the gallery also stages some spectacular concerts and in August the Classical – Irish Baroque Orchestra will perform to music lovers and enthusiastic audiences.

The concert hits the National Gallery for one performance on Saturday 15th August 2009.

This is a great and educational place to visit with the added bonus that admission to the award winning Millennium Wing is free, however a small donation is asked for.
