Smarmore Castle Located to the north of Dublin and just a few kilometres outside of Ardee in County Louth, the Smarmore Castle is a medieval castle that opens its doors to thousands of visitors every year. This historic fort still manages to offer a fascinating charm and style of a bygone era, but features the modern comforts that we enjoy in the 21st century.
Smarmore Castle, which dates back to the 14th century, has been fully refurbished to include a restaurant within the courtyard area, which is run independently. Within the castle grounds there is a private garden that is available to guests and plenty of parking spaces for cars. The castle has a leisure facility, which features an indoor swimming pool, gym, sauna and Jacuzzi.
As well as a fully equipped leisure centre, Smarmore Castle presents 5 en-suite bedrooms, which include four poster beds. The rooms are spacious, with a large sitting area and a writing desk. They also feature a TV, telephone, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities and other amenities to make for an enjoyable stay.
If you are visiting Ireland, take advantage of the car hire opportunities in Dublin, either from the airport or from rental companies within the city and head north along the M1 to County Louth to stay at Smarmore Castle and if you want to explore the local surroundings, driving around the area is the best way to do so.
The Louth County Museum is located in Dundalk, just a few miles away and exhibits the history of the area from the Stone Age period, to present day. In nearby Knockbridge, The Agnes Burns Centre has many attractions for the whole family and one of the most impressive places to visit is Newgrange, which is just over the border in County Meath. This historical passage tomb dates back to before the time of the pyramids in Egypt and Stone Henge in England.
There are also many activities to enjoy in County Louth including hill walking, cycling, pitch and putt and angling on the River Dee. There is an 18-hole golf course at Ardee and horse riding is possible just 20 kilometres from Smarmore Castle, at the Carrickmacross School of Equestrian.
