Dublin Simon Fun Run

Raise money for a charitable cause by taking part in the Dublin Simon Fun Run

On Saturday 10th of October 2009, the Dublin Simon Fun Run takes place and is the longest running charity event that takes place in the Phoenix Park. The organisers of the fun run promise a good day out for all the runners of all abilities, as well as for families.

There are three separate races that cater for school aged competitors and open age runners, with entertainment laid on for those taking part and those choosing to support.

People travelling to Ireland to take part in the fun run can take advantage of the many car hire companies within Dublin or from the airport, to help them get around the city and to run.

The fun run was first launched in 1983 and is a key annual fundraising event for Dublin Simon, a charity that works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin. The organisation was founded in 1969 by a group of students from the University College of Dublin. They provided homeless people with soup and sandwiches and a Soup Run still takes place 365 days a year.

As well as the Soup Run the organisation offers a ‘continuum of care’, aimed at those who are sleeping rough and for those people who have been able to find temporary accommodation.

An estimated 2,000 people ran in last year’s event, which is being held at the Phoenix Park, as it has been since its inception in 1983. Up to half the field are made up of school students every year and they and the thousands who have competed in the event each year, have helped to raise over €1 million for the charity.

This day is not only about raising money for an extremely good cause, it is also a day for the family to enjoy with entertainment including 98 FM’s Road Hog broadcasting live from early that morning.

The 98 FM Beetle Bugs will also be on hand and competitors can take part in the big ‘Warm Up’ led by Karl Henry. Children can have their faces painted and the Irish Athletics Association will be organising a Children’s Challenge.
