Dublin Attractions North of the Liffey Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland is split by the River Liffey and is crossed by a total of ten bridges. The Royal Canal and the Grand Canal provide connections between the cities port area and the northern and southern part of the River Shannon.
The city is steeped in history and can boast the oldest pub in Ireland, 'The Brazen Head' and the oldest university, Trinity College. It is the largest city in the country and is a centre of art and culture.
If flying to Ireland, Dublin Airport contains a number of car rental companies, which allows visitors the chance to explore more of the city than on foot and without having to rely on public transport.
North of the River Liffey sees O'Connell Street as the main thoroughfare and contains a large monument of former political radical Daniel O'Connell at the south end of the street and a large monument of former political activist Charles Stewart Parnell at the north end of the road. Just off O'Connell Street is Henry Street, an area for shoppers looking for high end fashion.
Also located on O'Connell Street is the General Post Office (GPO) which was used as the headquarters for the Irish Republican Brotherhood; and the provisional government of Ireland during the 1916 Easter Rising.
For those with a literarily interest the Dublin Writers Museum is located at the north end of Parnell Square. An 18th century restored mansion, the museum houses the works of some of Ireland's best writers, including Yeats. The museum also exhibits collections of paintings, photographs and memorabilia from a variety of writers.
Other places of interest include the Gallery of Modern Art, also situated at Parnell Square, where guided tours and lectures are offered.
The National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks includes exhibitions of the social economic and military history of the country. Located beside Collins Barracks is Phoenix Park, the largest enclosed city park in Europe. Situated within the park is the Dublin Zoological Gardens and is one of the best zoos in Europe and home to a wide variety of animals, birds and reptiles.
